The books that made us readers. The stories that planted seeds of wonder, curiosity, and the love of the written word.
Every reader has an origin story. Mine began with books left on a curb, a school cafeteria transformed into a bookstore once a year, and the particular joy of discovering that stories could take you somewhere completely different from wherever you were. The books in this section are not necessarily the most literary or the most profound in my collection. They are the ones that made me a reader. They planted seeds that grew into everything else—the Beats, the existentialists, the magical realists, the science fiction writers who warned us about the future. If you are introducing a young reader to books, or if you want to remember what it felt like to read for the pure pleasure of it, this is where to start. This collection celebrates these authors and many others I have read who first showed me what books could do.
