If On the Road is the sound of restless seeking, The Dharma Bums is what happens when the seeking turns inward. Kerouac follows the same restless energy but filters it through Zen Buddhism, mountain climbing, and a friendship with the poet Gary Snyder that crackles with genuine intellectual excitement. There is a quality to this book that feels like early morning—clear, cold, full of possibility. The idea that you could be both completely present in the physical world and completely awake to something beyond it—that spirituality was not separate from hiking a mountain or drinking wine with friends but continuous with those things—was genuinely new to me. The Beats gave me my first real philosophy of life, and this book was at the center of it.
